Basant 2027 in Lahore is 12, 13 and 14 March 2027. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz marked those dates following what the government described as a successful Basant 2026. That is the headline answer — but "announced" and "notified" are different things, and the difference matters if you are planning around them.
What is confirmed
- Dates: 12–14 March 2027, Lahore.
- City: the official 2027 plan covers Lahore. No other district has been announced.
- Format: a three-day regulated festival under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying framework, not an open season.
The Basant Festival 2027 portal lists the dates and marks them tentative, which is doing real work in that sentence: dates in the regulated era are set by provincial decision and can move.
What is still pending
Several things people assume are settled are not, at the time of writing:
- Public holidays. Not yet notified for 2027. The precedent is Basant 2026, when Punjab declared holidays on 6 and 7 February by S&GAD notification issued only two days before the festival.
- Flying timings. The Act allows the government or Deputy Commissioner to set days, times and locations. The 2027 timings have not been notified.
- No-fly zones. For 2026 these covered nine areas on the airport approach and take-off paths — Nadirabad, Gulshan Ali Colony, Nishat Colony, Bhatta Chowk, DHA Blocks Q, R and S, Al Faisal Town and Jorraypul. Expect something similar for 2027, issued separately.
- Retail dates. See below. This is the one that catches buyers out.
Before you book anything around these dates, check the Basant Festival 2027 portal directly. It is the source that gets updated; everything else, this page included, is a copy of what it said at the time of writing.
The second calendar: when anything may be sold
The festival dates are not the trading dates. Registration itself is staged, and the categories open at different times.
For the 2027 season, manufacturer registration opened on 5 September 2026 on the Basant portal, with an NOC required before production may begin and production uploaded to the portal as it happens. Registration for sellers, traders and kite-flying associations was indicated for January–February 2027, with exact dates announced by the province.
The consequence is a long stretch in which the festival is confirmed and publicised while it remains unlawful for any retailer to sell you a kite. That is not a market failure; it is the system working as designed. How to buy legally once it opens sets out what to check.
Why Basant moves from year to year
Traditionally Basant tracked the turn of the season rather than a fixed calendar date, tied to the spring and, practically, to when the wind arrives. A kite festival without wind is a crowd standing on a roof.
In the regulated era a third factor dominates: administrative decision. The province sets the window. That is why 2026 fell in early February and 2027 sits in mid-March, and why the portal matters more than any traditional almanac. The background is in the history of the festival.
Who announces what
Worth knowing which body does which thing, because rumours travel faster than notifications:
- Legislation — the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab, published in the Punjab Code.
- Festival framework and registration — the Basant Festival 2027 portal, with applications processed through eBiz Punjab.
- District permissions, timings and no-fly zones — the Deputy Commissioner Lahore.
- Enforcement — Punjab Police, throughout the season.
- Holidays — Services & General Administration Department, by notification.
If a date reaches you through a WhatsApp forward, check it against the portal before acting on it. Both the 2026 and 2027 seasons have produced a steady supply of confidently wrong dates.
Planning notes
- Do not treat the festival date as the shopping deadline. The retail window closes before the festival, not on it.
- Buy early in the window. Compressing a season's demand into a short official period makes the late rush worse than it used to be. Prices climb accordingly. Our pack prices are published and do not move in Basant week.
- Sort the roof before the kites. The 3.5 ft boundary-wall requirement and the 30 December 2026 compliance deadline are not things to discover in March.
