Buying kites online in Pakistan

Buying kites online in Pakistan used to mean scrolling a wall of listings with no way to judge any of them. That has changed, and not gradually: the law now decides who may sell kite-flying material at all. The most useful thing you can do as a buyer is stop comparing prices first and start checking registration first.

Is it legal to buy kites online?

Yes — from a registered seller, supplying approved sizes and cotton pinna, during the permitted period. The channel is not the issue. The seller's status and the goods themselves are.

Registration runs through the Basant Festival 2027 portal, which recognises four separate classes: manufacturers, traders, sellers and kite-flying associations. Applications are processed through eBiz Punjab and certificates issued by the Deputy Commissioner Lahore of the district. The categories are not interchangeable — a registered manufacturer is not thereby a registered retailer.

The four questions

In a chat window these take about a minute and separate a licensed seller from someone with boxes.

1. "Which category are you registered under?" The answer should be one word — seller, trader, manufacturer — without hesitation.
2. "Can I see the certificate?" A photograph is normal online. Reluctance is the answer.
3. "Does the pinna carry a QR code?" Legal dor does. Ask for a photo of it.
4. "Where do you deliver?" A precise, limited answer is a good sign. Sellers who claim to serve everywhere generally serve nowhere well.

What a good listing contains

• The material, named. Cotton, stated plainly, not implied.
• Sizes in local units. Patang in githi, gudda in tawa. A listing giving only centimetres was probably written by someone who has not flown one. Legal ceilings are 35 × 30 in for patang and 40 × 34 in for gudda.
• Tar and count for dor. Maximum 9 tar, minimum 28 count.
• A visible QR code on the pinna.
• A stated delivery area and a realistic timeframe.

Payment and delivery norms

Cash on delivery is normal. It is the default across most of this market and is not itself a warning sign — it is the most searched payment option for kites in Pakistan.

Expect limited delivery areas. Kites are fragile and seasonal. A seller promising nationwide next-day delivery during festival week is describing something that does not exist.

Get the contents in writing — not the total, the breakdown. How many kites, which sizes, how much dor, how many pinna, gloves included or not.

Inspect at handover. Agree in advance that you may open and check before paying, and that you can decline if the goods differ from the listing.

Timing

Buying online does not exempt you from the season's calendar. The retail window is bounded, registration for the seller category opens separately from manufacturing, and stock thins as the festival approaches. The dates and the trading calendar set out both.
