Basant 2027 Kite List

A working list for a Lahore roof at Basant 2027

A crowded Lahore bazaar lane, buyers holding kites outside the shops before Basant

Most Basant shopping goes wrong in the same two ways: far too many kites, and not nearly enough line. This is a quantity list for a Lahore roof over Basant 2027, 12 to 14 March. What each item costs is on the front page and the pinna sizes have their own page.

We sell everything singly rather than as a fixed package, which is inconvenient for writing a tidy product list and much better for your money. A package is only a good deal if its contents match your roof.

The list, in order of what runs out first

  1. Cotton dor, as a pinna. The first thing to run out and the most expensive to replace late.
  2. Kites, in two grades rather than one.
  3. Gloves — one pair per person who will hold a line, not one pair for the roof.
  4. Medical tape, wrapped round fingers before you fly.
  5. A first-aid kit, which is mandatory under the rooftop rules, not optional kit.

Note what is missing. No charkhi, because reels are prohibited and dor must be in pinna form. No "special" cutting string, because that is the banned category with a five-year sentence attached.

How many kites?

Fewer than you are about to buy, and in two sizes.

Kites are lost, not consumed. They go to pech, to wires, to the neighbour's roof, and to one gust that folds a 1.5 tawa before anyone has tied a kanni. A roof that flies steadily across the festival loses a handful a day; a roof that fights loses more.

The split matters more than the total. A 1 tawa is the everyday gudda that flies in ordinary Lahore wind, and it should be most of what you buy. A 1.5 tawa — 40 × 34 inches, the legal ceiling — is for steady wind and a firmer line, and two or three is plenty for a roof that is not fighting seriously. Buying only 1.5 tawa is the classic first-year mistake: on a light-wind afternoon they sit on the roof while everyone watches the neighbours fly.

How much dor?

One 2-piece pinna covers an ordinary family roof across the festival. Two flyers going properly, or a roof that treats every pech as a matter of honour, should plan on more line before the festival rather than buying again during it. Which pinna for which roof sets out the cases.

Buying more line late is where the season's real risk sits, because the last-week market is where somebody will offer you something that is not cotton and will tell you it cuts beautifully.

Gloves and tape are per person, not per roof

Cotton line under load opens bare hands, and it is the most common injury at Basant by a distance. One pair of gloves per flyer, and a roll of tape to wrap fingers before anyone starts.

This is the cheapest part of the list and the part people cut. A pair of gloves costs a fraction of a single kite and prevents the injury that ends the afternoon.

What to buy for children

Small kites and a job that is not the pech. Children hold the pinna; an adult holds the line during a fight. The rooftop rules require continuous supervision and keep children away from roof edges — the full rooftop standard is short and worth reading before the day, not after.

When to order

Book early and take delivery late. Those are two different decisions and it helps to separate them.

Prices climb in the last ten days, supply tightens because only registered manufacturers may produce, and the roof you are planning may still need a parapet check before 30 December. Booking early fixes your quantities while there is stock; asking for delivery on the day you actually want it on the roof keeps paper crisp and dor unhandled.

With us that means one WhatsApp message, a 50% advance to confirm, and the balance to the rider on delivery — how ordering works. Deliveries begin only once the Punjab Government announces the season and our certificate is reissued, which is currently suspended.

Frequently asked

What do I need to buy for Basant?

Cotton dor as a pinna, kites in two size grades, one pair of gloves per flyer, medical tape and a first-aid kit. Charkhi, chemical or metallic string, and oversized kites are prohibited.

How many kites do I need for Basant?

Fewer than most people buy, weighted towards 1 tawa rather than 1.5 tawa. Kites are lost to pech and wires rather than used up, so a steady roof loses a handful a day.

Is a Basant package better value than buying singly?

Only if its contents match your roof. We sell singly so you can buy two grades of kite and the line you actually need rather than a fixed ratio someone else chose.

How many pairs of gloves do I need?

One per person who will hold a line. Gloves are the cheapest item on the list and prevent the most common injury at Basant.

When should I place my Basant 2027 order?

Book early, before prices climb in the final ten days, and choose a delivery day close to when you want it on the roof. A booking is confirmed with 50% advance.
