Pinna Price in Lahore

What a pinna costs in Lahore and which one to buy

Balls of wound cotton pinna and spools of dor on the floor of a Lahore shop

A pinna is a ready-wound ball of cotton dor, and it is the only lawful way to buy kite line in Punjab — charkhi are prohibited. The pinna price in Lahore is set mostly by one thing people skip past: piece count. This page is about choosing between the sizes and working out how many you need, not about the per-yard economics of dor, which has its own page.

What does a pinna cost?

Ours is published: the 2-piece pinna is Rs 8,000, plain cotton, inside the 9 tar and 28 count limits, wound on a QR-coded ball. It is listed on the front page with everything else, singly, with no bundle you have to buy around it.

Across the market a pinna is, by some distance, the largest item in a season's spend. A single pinna costs many times what any individual kite does, which is why a buyer who spends an hour comparing kite rates and two minutes on dor has the whole thing backwards. A government rate list for 2027 has not been issued; when it is, it will cover this.

What "2-piece" and "4-piece" actually mean

Piece count is how much line is on the ball, not how many balls you get. A 4-piece pinna carries roughly double the line of a 2-piece and costs close to double. Premium and export grades step up again from there, and what you are paying for at that end is winding quality, not more line.

So the comparison between two pinnay is never the sticker alone. Two at the same price often hold different lengths, and the cheaper one is frequently not cheaper per yard. How to compare dor properly covers the arithmetic.

Which one does your roof need?

The honest answer is that it depends on how you fly, and there are only three real cases.

A 2-piece is the ordinary roof. A family, a few kites in the air at a time, nobody chasing pech all afternoon. Line gets lost to cuts, to wires and to the neighbour's roof, but not fast.

A 4-piece is the roof that is actually fighting. Every pech ends with somebody losing line, and if you are the one losing it, you will get through a 2-piece faster than you expect. Buying a second 2-piece mid-festival, in Basant week, at Basant week prices, is the expensive way to discover this.

Two 2-piece pinnay beat one 4-piece when two people are flying properly. Sharing one ball between two flyers means one of them is standing around, and a shared pinna is how line ends up tangled at the worst moment.

Why the pinna is the item to buy early

Three things push pinna prices up in the last ten days before Basant, and they all compound. Supply is finite because only registered manufacturers may produce, and production is uploaded to the portal as it happens. Demand arrives all at once. And the buyers left in the last week are the ones who cannot walk away, which is exactly when you get offered something that is not cotton.

That last risk is the real cost of leaving it late. Anything offered cheap, late, and on the basis that it cuts well is the thing the festival was banned over for twenty years. The rules on what is legal are short and worth the four minutes.

Before you pay

Two checks belong to the pinna specifically: the QR code on the ball, which ties the line to a registered manufacturer, and the piece count you were quoted, which should match what you are handed. The wider questions — material, tar, count, winding — are the six to ask about any dor, and they apply whatever format it comes in.

Budget for gloves alongside it. Cotton line under load opens bare hands, and it is the most common injury at Basant — gloves and tape are listed singly for that reason.

Frequently asked

How much is a pinna in Lahore?

Our 2-piece pinna is published at Rs 8,000. Market prices vary by piece count, tar and winding quality, and no government rate list has been notified for 2027 yet.

What is the difference between a 2-piece and a 4-piece pinna?

Piece count measures how much line is on the ball. A 4-piece carries roughly double the line of a 2-piece and costs close to double.

How many pinnay do I need for Basant?

One 2-piece suits an ordinary family roof over the festival. A roof that is fighting pech seriously, or has two flyers going at once, should plan for more line rather than buy again in Basant week.

Why is dor only sold as a pinna?

Charkhi are prohibited under the rules. Lawful dor is sold and used wound as a pinna, which is the format the QR-code system is built around.

Is cheap pinna a bad sign?

Usually. Unusual cheapness is rarely efficiency — it is normally less line than you think, or line that is not plain cotton.
